US-Iran marathon talks collapse
Iran's refusal to forgo nuclear weapons derails deal

Pakistan urged both the US and Iran to continue honoring their ceasefire commitments after talks in Islamabad aimed at ending the conflict collapsed, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said.
Dar made the remarks at a July 12 press conference after US Vice President JD Vance formally announced that the two sides had failed to reach an agreement, local newspaper Dawn reported. He added that he hopes both countries will maintain a positive spirit to achieve lasting peace and prosperity across the region and beyond.
Dar also said Pakistan will continue to play a role in facilitating communication and dialogue between Iran and the US.
The main reason the talks collapsed was a dispute over whether Iran would abandon nuclear weapons. The US demanded an explicit commitment from Tehran to fully give up nuclear arms and any means of acquiring them, but Iran refused. At a 6:30 a.m. press conference on July 12, Vance said he had negotiated with Iran for 21 hours since the previous day but failed to reach a final agreement.
