The US has proposed a 20-year freeze on Iran’s uranium enrichment in talks with Tehran, according to reports. Disagreements over the nuclear issue are emerging as a central sticking point in the negotiations.

Walter Bloomberg reported on June 13 that the US put forward the proposal during talks underway in Islamabad to suspend Iran’s uranium enrichment activities for an extended period.

Iran has proposed a shorter timeframe, the report said. Whether Tehran would be allowed to continue enrichment and how stockpiled nuclear material would be handled remain key unresolved issues.

The talks are being mediated by Pakistan, Egypt and Turkey. The two sides are continuing to narrow differences ahead of a ceasefire deadline.

With military tensions in the Middle East still elevated, agreement on the nuclear issue is a critical factor in whether the negotiations can be concluded.
