China and Russia reaffirmed their strategic coordination after the first round of US-Iran talks on ending the war collapsed, in a message that appeared aimed at countering the US.

Chinese President Xi Jinping met Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on July 15, according to state-run Xinhua News Agency.

China and Russia must safeguard their legitimate interests through closer and stronger strategic cooperation amid changes unseen in a century, Xi said. He added that the two countries should preserve unity among Global South nations and demonstrate the responsibility of permanent members of the United Nations Security Council.

Xi also called on the two sides to maintain strategic resolve and pursue joint development on the basis of mutual trust and support. He said they should make full use of their geographic proximity and complementary strengths to deepen all-around cooperation and bolster development resilience.

He added that the two countries should firmly uphold and practice multilateralism and restore the authority and vitality of the United Nations. They should also work closely through frameworks including the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and BRICS to move the international order in a fairer and more rational direction.

Lavrov said Russia wants to faithfully implement the agreements reached by the two leaders, maintain high-level exchanges and strengthen practical cooperation amid what he described as a grave and complex international situation. He added that he hoped the two countries would uphold international fairness and justice, advance bilateral ties and contribute to world peace and stability.

Citing Russian state media, AFP reported that Lavrov told a press conference later that day that, after mentioning the war in Iran, Russia could help address energy shortages in countries seeking to cooperate with Moscow, including China.
