Iran has proposed opening the Oman side of the Strait of Hormuz as a condition for reaching a truce agreement with the US.

Reuters reported this on June 15, citing Iranian sources. One source said Tehran may be willing to allow ships to use the side of the strait that falls within Omani territorial waters without any interference from Iran.

The proposal depends on whether the US is prepared to accept Iran's demands, the source said, adding that the condition is central to any solution involving the Strait of Hormuz.

The report did not say whether Iran would agree to remove any mines it may have laid. It also did not specify whether all vessels, including ships linked to Israel, would be allowed to pass.

Another Western source said a plan to allow free passage for ships through Omani waters had been discussed. It was not clear whether the US had responded.

Meanwhile, the US military began a maritime blockade against Iran centered on the Strait of Hormuz at 10 a.m. Eastern Time on June 13, or 11 p.m. in South Korea. The move followed the collapse of the first round of truce talks over the weekend and is intended to cut off Iran's oil exports and wartime supplies to pressure Tehran into accepting US terms.
