Anthropic will in return commit to spending more than $100 billion on Amazon Web Services over the next decade.
Amazon.com Inc. plans to invest up to $25 billion in Anthropic, while the artificial intelligence startup has agreed to spend more than $100 billion on Amazon Web Services over the next 10 years, the Wall Street Journal reported. The deal highlights how alliances in the global AI market are moving beyond simple equity investments into infrastructure partnerships that secure revenue for both sides.

According to the Journal's April 20 report, Amazon will make an additional $5 billion investment in Anthropic. The total could increase to $25 billion depending on commercial performance. Amazon invested $4 billion in Anthropic in 2023.
The core of the agreement is a large-scale exchange of computing resources. Anthropic has committed to using more than $100 billion of AWS over the next decade. In return, Amazon has pledged to provide as much as 5 gigawatts of computing power, with about 20% of that capacity to be supplied by the end of this year.
For Amazon, the deal bolsters its cloud business. It gives AWS stable access to high-performance AI models and secures a major customer for Trainium, the company's in-house AI chip.
Anthropic also stands to gain large-scale computing capacity, helping accelerate development of the next generation of Claude. The company has recently faced service delays and weaker performance as demand for AI models surged. The agreement could help relieve those bottlenecks. Earlier in April, Anthropic also expanded partnerships with Google and Broadcom to secure additional tensor processing unit, or TPU, capacity.
Chief Executive Officer Dario Amodei said in a statement that the company needs to build infrastructure that can keep pace with rapidly rising demand for AI models.
