Iran said it will not accept U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement extending a ceasefire and will act in line with its national interest. It also threatened a military response if the U.S. maintains its maritime blockade.

Shortly after Trump announced the ceasefire extension on April 22, Iranian state television reported that Tehran would reject what it called a unilateral U.S. move to extend the truce.

Tasnim, an Iranian news outlet, reported that Iran views the continued U.S. maritime blockade as a hostile act. Unless the measure is withdrawn, Iran does not plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and could use force, if necessary, to break through the blockade.

Separately, an aide to Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf wrote on X on April 21 that Trump’s ceasefire extension was a scheme to buy time for a surprise attack. The aide added that Iran should respond militarily to any U.S. maritime blockade.

Ghalibaf is considered a leading candidate to head Iran’s negotiating team if a second round of talks between the U.S. and Iran is held.
