Iran's military attacked three cargo ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz and seized two of them.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps attacked the three vessels in the strait on April 22, according to the BBC and other foreign media reports. Two of the ships — the MSC Francesca and the Depaminodas — were seized and are being escorted to the Iranian coast, the IRGC said.
The IRGC said the MSC Francesca was linked to Israel. It also claimed the two seized vessels had repeatedly violated Iranian military regulations and manipulated their automatic identification systems, or AIS.
The attacks came hours after President Donald Trump said he would extend the ceasefire with Iran until negotiations are concluded. In a Truth Social post on April 22, Trump wrote, "We will extend the ceasefire until their proposal is submitted and discussions are concluded one way or the other." The US counter-blockade of the Strait of Hormuz will remain in place.
Separately, Axios reported on April 22, citing multiple sources, that the US is willing to extend the ceasefire with Iran by three to five days. Trump announced the extension but did not specify a timeframe. A US official briefed on the matter told Axios the ceasefire "will not continue indefinitely."
