President Donald Trump said Iran had dropped plans to execute women protesters, thrusting human-rights issues back into focus as a diplomatic factor.

On April 22, Trump wrote on social media that eight women protesters who had been due to be executed would no longer face the death penalty.

Four will be released immediately, while the other four will receive one-month prison terms, he wrote.

Trump also thanked Iran and its leadership for halting the executions in response to his request as president of the United States.

Iran’s judiciary had earlier denied reports that the women would face execution in the case, leaving conflicting accounts from the two sides.

Markets are watching whether human-rights issues could affect diplomatic negotiations and political messaging. The facts of the case and any diplomatic fallout remain key variables.
