President Donald Trump said he has no intention of using nuclear weapons against Iran, which he described as being at war with the US.

Asked at a White House event on reducing medical costs on April 23 whether he intended to use nuclear weapons against Iran, Trump replied, “No.”

“We’ve already completely devastated them with conventional means alone, so why would I use nuclear weapons?” Trump said. “I will not use nuclear weapons. No one should ever use them.”

He then responded to the reporter who asked the question: “Why would you ask such a stupid question?”

Trump had written on Truth Social on April 7 that “an entire civilization” could disappear that night and “never come back,” prompting speculation that he was signaling a possible nuclear strike on Iran.

His comments on April 23 appeared to make clear that he does not intend to use nuclear weapons against Iran.

On negotiations over ending the war and denuclearization, Trump said, “We’ve been talking to them, but they don’t even know who is leading the country right now. They are in chaos.”

“I don’t want to rush,” he added. “I want a great deal. I want a deal that keeps our country and the world safe from lunatics with nuclear weapons.”
