Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi visited Pakistan and conveyed Tehran’s position on a ceasefire, Iranian media reported on April 25.
Araghchi arrived in Islamabad late the previous night without prior notice and met on April 25 with Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir, the reports said. The two sides shared Iran’s view on a ceasefire and the considerations behind it. They also discussed the latest ceasefire-related developments and ways to cooperate to promote peace and stability in West Asia.
Munir has emerged as a key figure in efforts to mediate between the US and Iran. Reuters, citing Pakistani sources, reported that Araghchi conveyed to Pakistani officials Iran’s reservations about US demands and Tehran’s own conditions for negotiations.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry said Munir expressed Pakistan’s intention to continue mediation efforts until results are achieved.
Araghchi also met Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on April 25. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Munir and National Security Adviser Asim Malik were also present.
Araghchi’s late-night visit fueled expectations for a second round of US-Iran talks, but Iran made clear it would not take part in direct negotiations. Araghchi is set to visit Oman and Russia after his trip to Pakistan.
