A shooting at the White House Correspondents' Dinner venue is being investigated as a suspected assassination attempt targeting President Donald Trump.
As of April 25, Trump had faced three direct threats: the 2024 shooting at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, an attempted shooting at a golf course in Florida, and the latest incident at the White House dinner venue.
The most serious case was the shooting at a July 2024 campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump was hit by a bullet fired from about 200 to 300 yards away from an AR-15-style rifle, leaving a wound on the upper part of his right ear. Images of him raising his fist immediately after the shooting spread widely and were seen as heightening the political symbolism of the episode.
Another incident occurred in September 2024 at a golf course in Florida, where an armed suspect allegedly aimed an SKS-style rifle. The suspect was arrested.
The White House dinner venue incident is being cited as the first suspected assassination attempt since Trump took office. The suspect was subdued after charging toward a security checkpoint while carrying a shotgun, a handgun and a bladed weapon. One U.S. Secret Service agent came under gunfire at the scene, but did not suffer serious injuries because of protective gear.
In the US, Presidents Abraham Lincoln, James Garfield, William McKinley and John F. Kennedy were assassinated while in office.
