The suspect in the shooting at the White House Correspondents' Dinner has been identified as a California teacher and game developer.
CNN reported on April 26 that investigators identified the suspect as Cole Allen, a 31-year-old Torrance, California, resident. He was subdued while armed near the dinner venue attended by President Donald Trump and other prominent figures.
Public records show Allen worked as a part-time instructor at C2 Education, a test-preparation and tutoring company. The company named him its Teacher of the Month in December 2024.
His academic background has also come into focus. Allen received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the California Institute of Technology in 2017 and later earned a master's degree in computer engineering from California State University, Dominguez Hills. During college, local media featured his work developing an emergency braking device for wheelchairs.
Allen also had a background in game development. He developed the indie game "Boredom" and released it on Steam, and was working on a follow-up title. The game's name was registered as a trademark in 2018.
Federal Election Commission records show Allen donated $25 to Kamala Harris's presidential campaign in October 2024.
Investigators are examining the motive and whether he acted alone, among other aspects of the case.
