Iran is moving to advance legislation that would seek compensation from countries it says caused damage to the country.
Odaily reported on April 27 that Ebrahim Azizi, chairman of the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, is preparing a bill requiring governments that harmed Iran over the past several years, froze its assets or imposed sanctions to pay compensation.
The measure remains in draft form and will be submitted to a plenary session of parliament for formal debate as a bill.
The move appears to be a response to international sanctions and asset freezes. It could add to diplomatic friction between Iran and Western countries as tensions persist.
