Newly listed altcoins are posting stronger returns than older tokens in the current market, according to an analysis.

Cryptopolitan, a crypto-focused media outlet, reported on April 27 that 2025 exchange data showed a clear performance gap between newly listed altcoins and existing tokens.

The report said the altcoin market has shifted in a way that no longer rewards a simple buy-and-hold strategy. In the past, liquidity spread across the broader market and lifted most altcoins together. More recently, liquidity and investor attention have become increasingly concentrated in a smaller group of tokens.

Newly listed altcoins in 2025 posted average gains of about 5%, while older altcoins stayed in average loss territory of 18% to 23%, the data showed.

The divergence was also clear across exchanges. Altcoins listed on Binance gained an average 6.58% over the past 90 days. Assets listed on Coinbase fell an average 16.8%, while those on derivatives-focused exchange Deribit dropped about 40.1%.

Liquidity, market-maker participation and token exposure on each exchange are emerging as the main drivers of the return gap, the report said. Binance, in particular, was identified as the strongest platform for new-token circulation and trading efficiency.

The analysis also found that social-media attention, liquidity and whale activity now have a greater influence on altcoin pricing than technology or long-term value.

"The altcoin market has shifted to a selective-rally structure and is showing a different pattern from the traditional altcoin season, when all assets tended to rise together," Cryptopolitan said.
