"ChatGPT weekly active users stay below 1 billion"

Concerns are mounting over OpenAI’s growth prospects.
The Wall Street Journal reported on April 28 that OpenAI missed targets for new users and revenue, stoking internal concern over whether it can sustain the massive cost of its artificial-intelligence investments.
The newspaper said Sarah Friar, OpenAI’s chief financial officer, recently told other executives that the company may be unable to pay for future AI data-center costs if revenue does not grow quickly enough.
The WSJ added that ChatGPT’s weekly active users failed to top 1 billion last year and that revenue growth has slowed. It also said users are migrating to rival chatbots such as Anthropic’s Claude and Google’s Gemini.
OpenAI developed ChatGPT and helped ignite Wall Street’s AI boom. The company is preparing for an initial public offering this year.
The report sent related stocks lower in New York trading. Nvidia, the leading AI-chip company, fell 1.6%, while Broadcom dropped 4.4%. AMD and Micron declined 3.4% and 3.9%, respectively.
