President Donald Trump said he will soon review a new peace proposal from Iran, but indicated it would be difficult to accept.
In a Truth Social post on May 2, Trump wrote that he would soon review “the plan Iran just sent.” He added that it was hard to imagine accepting the proposal because Iran “has not paid a sufficient price” for what it has done to humanity and the world over the past 47 years.
The post came shortly after Iranian state media reported that Tehran had sent the US a 14-point proposal.
Speaking to reporters before boarding Air Force One in Palm Beach, Florida, Trump said he had been briefed on the concept of the negotiations and would now receive the exact wording of the proposal. He added that he would provide an update later.
Trump also denied remarks from the previous night had meant it might be better not to negotiate at all.
“I never said that,” Trump said. “I only said that if we were to leave the Middle East right now, it would take them 20 years to rebuild. We are not leaving right now.”
