Tensions are rising again around the Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime chokepoint in the Middle East. Iran has pushed back against possible US naval involvement and signaled a hard-line response, fueling concern over tanker strikes and shipping disruptions.

Walter Bloomberg reported on X on May 4 that Iran told the US Navy to avoid approaching the Strait of Hormuz after the US indicated it was willing to intervene militarily to assist a stranded vessel.

Iran warned of a "hard-line response." A tanker was reportedly struck, and thousands of sailors were said to be stranded at sea.

Nuclear negotiations have also stalled. Iran is reportedly demanding that the blockade be lifted as a precondition for resuming talks.

Markets are focused on whether tensions in the Strait of Hormuz will lead to disruptions in crude supply. That would heighten energy-price volatility and deepen uncertainty across global financial markets.
