The US said it does not want a broader military conflict even as tensions rise over control of the Strait of Hormuz. It also suggested responsibility for managing the waterway could soon be shifted to the international community.

Walter Bloomberg, an overseas channel that posts breaking economic news, reported on May 5 that US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth wrote on X that “Iran cannot control the Strait of Hormuz.”

“We do not want a fight,” Hegseth wrote, signaling caution against further military escalation.

He also said responsibility for the strait would soon be handed over “to the world,” pointing to the possibility of management through international cooperation.

As military tensions between the US and Iran rise around the Strait of Hormuz, the remarks were seen as carrying both a message of deterrence over control of the waterway and an effort to prevent further escalation.
