The US gave Iran advance notice before a vessel escort operation in the Strait of Hormuz, signaling an effort to contain tensions and avoid a broader escalation.

Odaily, a crypto-focused media outlet, reported on May 5 that a senior US official said Washington had shared the plan with Tehran before the operation and told it not to interfere.

The message was delivered unofficially in an effort to prevent the situation from deteriorating further, the report said. Even so, Iran later continued attacks on US Navy ships, commercial vessels and the United Arab Emirates.

US officials currently view the situation as manageable. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said recently that Iran's attacks were not severe enough to trigger a return to full-scale war.

Still, military conflict could resume if the diplomatic stalemate persists. Some US and Israeli officials believe President Donald Trump could consider additional military action as early as this week.

Markets are also watching whether prolonged tensions around the Strait of Hormuz could affect oil supplies and fuel volatility in global financial markets.
