‘Middle East Tensions Must Not Escalate ... Let’s Cooperate’

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the issue of access through the Strait of Hormuz could be resolved quickly during a visit to China. He also spoke by phone with Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister as Tehran stepped up diplomatic efforts.
China’s Foreign Ministry said on May 6 that Foreign Minister Wang Yi met Araghchi in Beijing.
The trip was Araghchi’s first visit to China since the Iran war and took place at Beijing’s invitation. He said Iran would firmly defend its national sovereignty and national dignity while continuing to build consensus through peace negotiations and seek a comprehensive, lasting solution. He added that the current issue over opening the Strait of Hormuz could be resolved quickly.
He also said military means had proved incapable of resolving a political crisis.
Wang said the international community shared concerns over the resumption of normal and safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. China hopes the parties involved will respond swiftly to strong calls from the international community, he added.
During his stay in Beijing, Araghchi also discussed regional developments in a phone call with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan. Iran’s Foreign Ministry said the two ministers stressed that diplomatic efforts and regional cooperation must continue to prevent tensions from flaring again. They also underscored the importance of sustained dialogue among countries in the region.
Iranian media reported that Araghchi had explained Iran’s diplomatic efforts to end the war to China, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt and Qatar.
Separately, the United Arab Emirates said on May 4 that Iran had resumed missile and drone attacks on the country. Neighboring Gulf states, including Saudi Arabia, collectively urged Iran to halt the attacks. Iran denied attacking the UAE and said baseless attempts to manipulate public opinion were spreading.
