Former US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell said President Donald Trump may seek Chinese President Xi Jinping’s advice on relations with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un when he visits China on May 14-15.

Speaking to reporters in Washington on May 7, Campbell said Trump is determined and persistent in pursuing diplomatic engagement with North Korea. He added that Trump is constantly searching for ways to deliver his message to Kim.

Campbell also said North Korea appears unwilling to enter talks with the US unless it is recognized as a nuclear weapons state. He said Pyongyang may be less willing to engage with Washington than in the past, particularly after strengthening ties with China and Russia since the last summit between the North Korean and US leaders.

Campbell said he believes Trump will ask Xi for advice on how to make contact with Kim. For now, North Korea does not appear to have much interest in talks with the US, he said, though he added that the country remains highly unpredictable and the situation should be watched.
