President Donald Trump will visit China on May 13 and hold a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing the following day, the White House said. The White House laid out the two-night, three-day itinerary at a briefing on May 10.
Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly said Trump will arrive in Beijing on the evening of May 13, followed by a welcome ceremony and bilateral summit on May 14.
The two leaders will also tour Beijing’s Temple of Heaven that day and attend a state banquet. A bilateral tea meeting and a working lunch are scheduled for May 15.
Kelly said U.S.-China relations under Trump’s leadership are being refocused on restoring the safety, security and prosperity of the American people. The summit will pursue those goals while taking what she called a clear-eyed view of current economic and security realities.
Trump does not travel abroad merely for symbolism, Kelly added. Americans can expect better deals for the country, she said.
Key agenda items include plans to establish a U.S.-China trade and investment commission and expand bilateral cooperation in aerospace, agriculture and energy.
Security issues will also feature prominently.
A senior U.S. official said at the briefing that Trump will directly press Xi on China’s purchases of Iranian crude, the possibility of weapons exports and supplies of dual-use goods to Russia.
The official said Trump will also raise issues related to China’s nuclear program. On Taiwan, the official said dialogue between the two countries is continuing, but there is no expectation of a change in longstanding U.S. policy.
Asked about extending the one-year truce in the U.S.-China trade war agreed in November 2025, another official said the agreement remains in effect and has not yet expired. Whether it will be extended immediately remains uncertain, though the administration is confident it will announce any potential extension at an appropriate time.
Kelly said Trump also hopes to use the visit to invite Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, to Washington later this year for a reciprocal visit.
The trip will be Trump’s first visit to China in about eight years and six months, since November 2017 during his first year in office. It will also mark the first face-to-face meeting between Trump and Xi in about six months, since they met in Busan on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in late October 2025.
