Summary
- Solana said it has begun testing Alpenglow, the biggest consensus architecture upgrade in its history.
- Alpenglow aims to improve network response speed and stability by replacing parts of proof-of-stake (PoS), TowerBFT, and Proof-of-History with a new structure.
- The success of the Alpenglow test is seen as a key factor in the timing of its mainnet rollout and Solana’s network performance.

Solana has started testing Alpenglow, the largest overhaul of its consensus architecture to date. The change is being closely watched as a potential turning point for the network’s speed and stability.
CoinDesk reported on May 11 that Anza, Solana’s core development firm, had begun running Alpenglow on a community test cluster.
The upgrade replaces parts of Solana’s existing consensus design, including proof-of-stake, TowerBFT and portions of Proof-of-History, with a new structure.
In a post on X, Anza wrote that “the biggest change to Solana’s consensus architecture in history” is now running on validator infrastructure ahead of a mainnet rollout.
Solana currently uses Proof-of-History to record the order of transactions and TowerBFT to reach consensus among validators on block status. The system has supported high throughput and low fees, but it has also faced recurring concerns over outages and instability during periods of network congestion.
Alpenglow is designed to simplify validator communications and block finalization. It aims to reduce transaction finality from several seconds to near real time.
The test also includes verification of a transition process developers call Alpenswitch. The process refers to validator nodes moving from the current consensus framework to an Alpenglow-based structure in a live network environment.
The success of the test is seen as a key factor in determining when Alpenglow can be deployed on mainnet.
Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko said at the recent Consensus Miami 2026 event that Alpenglow could be rolled out on mainnet next quarter if testing proceeds smoothly.
