Iran is seeking to use China as a diplomatic channel to send a message to the US ahead of President Donald Trump’s visit to China.

Walter Bloomberg, a breaking-news social media account focused on global markets, reported on May 12 that Iran’s ambassador to China said Tehran is demanding a permanent ceasefire, the lifting of sanctions on Iran and recognition of Iran’s rights, and that China could convey those demands to major powers.

Iran has also expressed support for a four-point peace proposal put forward by China after a recent meeting between the two countries’ foreign ministers in Beijing.

Markets are increasingly viewing China as a key variable in Middle East diplomacy as negotiations between the US and Iran remain deadlocked.

Trump also needs China’s cooperation to ease tensions in the Middle East. As the regional conflict drags on, volatility in international oil prices and global financial markets has increased, adding to economic and political pressure on the US.
