Some Chinese companies discussed selling weapons to Iran through third countries to conceal the arms' origin, an allegation that could add a new flashpoint to US-China tensions.

Walter Bloomberg reported on May 13 that US authorities had detected signs of such discussions involving some Chinese firms.

US intelligence agencies also identified related discussions between Chinese companies and Iranian officials.

It remains unclear whether any weapons were actually delivered.

The allegations emerged ahead of a meeting in Beijing between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The US also alleged that China provided Iran with intelligence, satellite support and dual-use technology.

Washington has also accused China of buying large volumes of Iranian crude at discounted prices.

China's government has not issued an official response to the allegations.

Markets are watching whether any connection between the US-China summit and Middle East tensions could affect international oil prices and broader geopolitical risk.
