President Donald Trump is considering a large-scale clemency action to mark the 250th anniversary of the US, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Citing multiple sources, the Journal reported on May 13 that Trump is weighing 250 pardons this summer to commemorate the anniversary. The plan remains in the early stages of discussion. If carried out, it would further broaden Trump’s already expansive use of presidential pardon powers.
The pardons could be announced on June 14, US Flag Day, or on July 4, Independence Day. A White House official told the Journal that Trump has the final authority over any pardon action and that no decision has been made.
The cryptocurrency industry is watching whether Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of FTX known as SBF, will be included. Bankman-Fried publicly requested a pardon last year. At the time, Trump said he had no intention of granting one.
Trump has also pardoned figures from the crypto industry since taking office in January last year, including Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, known as CZ, and Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht.
