The US government has approved Nvidia Corp. to sell its high-performance H200 artificial intelligence chips to about 10 Chinese companies, Reuters reported.
Citing multiple sources, Reuters reported on May 14 that Washington had approved sales of the H200 to Chinese companies including Tencent Holdings Ltd., Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and ByteDance Ltd. Some distributors, including Lenovo Group Ltd. and Foxconn, also received approval to sell the chips.
The approved companies can buy the H200 through Nvidia or intermediaries. Each company can purchase as many as 75,000 chips.
No H200 shipments have taken place so far. Reuters said US-China technology competition is affecting even transactions that have already been approved, leaving Nvidia caught between the two countries' competing priorities.
The matter is drawing added attention as Nvidia Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang visits China. Huang was not initially included on the White House's list of delegates for the China trip, but joined after being invited directly by US President Donald Trump.
