President Donald Trump said Chinese President Xi Jinping told him China would not provide military support to Iran, indicating the issue was a key topic in talks between the two leaders.

Trump said Xi told him Beijing would not supply military equipment to Iran, according to Walter Bloomberg on May 14.

He also said Xi backed a potential agreement between the US and Iran and expressed willingness to help mediate efforts to ease tensions.

The two sides also agreed that the Strait of Hormuz should remain open, the White House said.

The Strait of Hormuz is a key maritime chokepoint through which about 20% of global oil supply passes.

The US has recently said China is importing large volumes of Iranian crude and maintaining economic and diplomatic ties with Tehran.

Markets are watching how discussions on Iran between the US and Chinese leaders could affect geopolitical risks in the Middle East and international oil prices.
