Iran said it will soon unveil a new control system to manage ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

Ebrahim Azizi, chairman of the Iranian parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said May 16 that Tehran had prepared a specialized mechanism to oversee vessel traffic in the strait as part of efforts to protect national sovereignty and secure international trade, according to Iran's state-run IRIB broadcaster and other local media.

Only commercial vessels and countries cooperating with Iran would benefit under the new system, he said. The route would remain fully closed to what he called agents of the so-called "liberation project."

Azizi added that Iran would secure what it considers its legitimate rights, including costs and fees, in exchange for specialized services provided under the new system.
