Iran has strongly demanded compensation for war damage and the return of frozen assets in negotiations with the US, according to a report, underscoring a continued impasse in the talks.

Odaily, a cryptocurrency-focused media outlet, reported on May 18 that Iran's Tasnim News Agency, citing a source close to the negotiating team, said the US had made some changes to its draft. Even so, fundamental differences remain because of what the source described as US greed and an unrealistic approach.

The source said Iran's position is that the US must compensate for damage caused by the war. Frozen Iranian assets must also be returned to the Iranian people through a clear and reliable mechanism.

Markets have been parsing a string of reports on US-Iran negotiations in recent days, but major gaps remain on key issues. Compensation, sanctions relief and the handling of Iran's nuclear program are emerging as the main sticking points.
