Tether, the issuer of the world’s largest stablecoin, USDT, has filed trademarks in South Korea for its company name and logo, fueling speculation that it may be preparing to expand in the market.

Seoul Economic Daily reported on May 19 that Tether recently submitted seven trademark applications in South Korea through KIPRIS, the country’s patent information search service. The filings include the Tether name and logo, as well as Tether Gold, or XAUT.

The move comes as competition in the stablecoin market intensifies and global issuers flesh out their trademark and corporate strategies in South Korea.

Some market participants view the filings as a step toward building a foundation for future business operations in the country.
