South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun said on May 20 that a South Korean oil tanker is leaving the Strait of Hormuz after consultations with Iran.

Testifying before the National Assembly's Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee, Cho said the government had completed talks with Iranian authorities. The vessel began sailing on May 19 and is passing through the waterway "very cautiously." It is carrying 2 million barrels, he added.

Cho made the remarks after lawmakers criticized the government for a lack of transparency, including its decision not to release CCTV footage of HMM Namu, which was struck in the Strait of Hormuz. He said the tanker's passage was closely tied to the issue and that the matter was one of timing, not an attempt to hide anything.
