OpenAI to Invest More Than $230 Million in Singapore, Open First Overseas AI Lab

OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, will invest more than $230 million in Singapore to help build the country’s artificial intelligence ecosystem.
The company announced on May 19 that it is launching “OpenAI for Singapore” with the Ministry of Digital Development and Information to support the country’s national AI strategy. The project will involve more than S$300 million, or about $234 million.
As part of the partnership, OpenAI will establish an Applied AI Lab in Singapore. It will be the company’s first AI lab outside the US.
OpenAI plans to hire more than 200 technical workers in Singapore over the next several years. It also wants to make the country one of its global hubs for forward-deployed engineers, who help companies deploy AI in real business settings.
The lab will operate in areas aligned with Singapore’s AI strategy, including public services, finance, healthcare and digital infrastructure. OpenAI also plans to gradually expand its Singapore office as it adds local staff.
Denise Dresser, OpenAI’s chief revenue officer, said Singapore has a clear goal of using AI to drive long-term growth and improve people’s lives. OpenAI will work with the country to strengthen its position as a global AI leader, including by helping train the next generation of AI talent, she added.
