US Representative Nick Begich, a lawmaker known for his pro-crypto stance, has introduced a bill that would add Bitcoin to government reserve assets, as debate continues in the US over establishing a strategic Bitcoin reserve.
Begich wrote on X on May 21 that he had introduced the American Reserve Modernization Act, or ARMA.
The bill would establish a framework for the federal government to manage its digital assets in an integrated manner and protect them as reserve assets for future generations.
Its central aim is to lay the groundwork for including Bitcoin in the government's reserve asset portfolio.
"The United States reserve balance sheet is a core element of our national insurance policy," Begich wrote.
He said it underpins the value of the dollar and provides trust and stability in times of uncertainty. Over time, however, market views on which assets can serve as sustainable stores of value may change.
The US should recognize that shift and secure the flexibility to expand its reserve asset portfolio, he added.
Discussion in Washington has recently broadened over the need for a strategic Bitcoin reserve and government-level digital asset holdings.
Markets are watching how the bill may affect the US government's BTC policy direction and institutional investor sentiment.
