Strategy (MSTR) has signaled it may sell some of its Bitcoin holdings before the end of 2026.
Michael Saylor, Strategy’s chairman, said in a recent YouTube interview on May 22 that the company could sell part of its Bitcoin between now and year-end. He added that Strategy plans to manage its dollar cash holdings through an appropriate mix of stock and bond issuance.
Saylor cited long-term shareholder value as the reason for the potential shift. Strategy’s ultimate goal, he said, is to maximize Bitcoin holdings per share by 2033, seven years from now. He also emphasized disciplined, planned asset management using a multivariable model.
Credit rating agencies’ assessment standards are another major reason the company is keeping the option of a sale open. Saylor previously said that if the market viewed Strategy’s roughly $65 billion in Bitcoin as an asset it would never sell, credit rating firms would not recognize it as a substantive asset. Flexibility is needed to protect the company’s long-term interests, he said.
The prospect of Strategy’s first Bitcoin sale has put the market on alert. The company, which has been accumulating Bitcoin since 2020, currently holds 843,768 tokens. Its average purchase price is about $75,700, roughly in line with Bitcoin’s current price of $75,650.
