Iranian state media reported that a draft agreement between the US and Iran includes provisions for both sides to refrain from attacking each other, as separate reports said Washington and Tehran were nearing a broader deal to end hostilities.
Reuters reported on May 24 that Iran's Fars News Agency said a draft memorandum of understanding, or MOU, between the US and Iran stipulates that the US and its allies would not attack Iran or its allies.
In return, Iran would pledge not to launch any preemptive military attack on the US or its allies, Fars reported.
Axios earlier reported that the US and Iran were close to signing an MOU focused on extending a ceasefire by 60 days, keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and pursuing nuclear talks.
The two sides also discussed plans for further negotiations on keeping the Strait of Hormuz open, lifting the blockade on Iran in stages, halting uranium enrichment, disposing of highly enriched uranium and easing sanctions.
The US and Iran have not officially disclosed the contents of any agreement so far.
