China said a swift resolution is needed as the prospect of a deal between the US and Iran comes into focus. As diplomatic efforts continue to end the war in the Middle East, Beijing said there is no need for the conflict to continue.
Odaily, a digital-asset media outlet, reported on May 25 that Mao Ning, a spokeswoman for China’s Foreign Ministry, made the remarks at a regular briefing in response to reports that Washington and Tehran are nearing an agreement to halt the war in the Middle East.
Asked whether China had played a diplomatic role in the talks and what it expected from any agreement, Mao said Beijing’s position on the situation involving Iran was very clear.
“This war should never have happened in the first place, and there is no need for it to continue,” she said. “Finding a solution as soon as possible would benefit both the US and Iran, as well as countries in the region and the wider world.”
The remarks came as the possibility of easing tensions between the US and Iran drew attention. Markets are also watching whether reduced Middle East risks could affect international oil prices and sentiment toward risk assets.
