The Israeli military said it had expanded the scope of its ground operations in southern Lebanon. Markets are watching for an escalation in Middle East tensions and the potential for greater volatility in global oil prices.

Walter Bloomberg reported on May 26 that an Israeli military official said forces had expanded ground operations beyond the so-called Yellow Line in southern Lebanon. The objective is to "remove direct threats to Israeli civilians and troops," the official said.

Israel has recently intensified military operations in southern Lebanon, citing the threat of rocket and drone attacks by Hezbollah. The military is believed to be seeking a wider buffer zone near the border and the removal of Hezbollah military infrastructure.

Tensions on the Lebanese front have persisted even as the US and Iran continue talks on extending a ceasefire and pursuing nuclear negotiations. Hezbollah is classified as an Iran-backed militant group and remains one of the key variables in the conflict between Iran and Israel.

Broader military clashes in the Middle East could add to volatility across global financial markets, including international oil prices and the dollar, market participants say.
