Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it approved the passage of 25 commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz over the past 24 hours. Markets are watching for signs that maritime transport in the Middle East is returning to normal.

Walter Bloomberg reported on May 26 that the naval arm of the IRGC said a total of 25 vessels, including tankers, container ships and other commercial ships, passed through the Strait of Hormuz with Iran’s approval during the period.

The vessels transited the strait under Iranian coordination and security support, the IRGC said. Traffic through the waterway has been limited since tensions between the US and Iran escalated.

The US Navy has also reportedly provided limited support for some commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Market participants say the US and Iran are continuing talks over maritime traffic controls and security arrangements.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical route for global crude shipments. Changes in transit conditions there could become a major driver for global financial markets, including international oil prices and dollar flows.
