Ethereum could lose competitiveness if it fails to show progress on privacy within the next 12 months, as the blockchain pushes the feature as its next core growth strategy. Market attention is centered on the importance of stronger privacy tools to expand institutional investor demand.
Crypto news outlet CryptoSlate reported on May 27 that Ethereum has recently made enhanced privacy features a key strategic focus as it grapples with stagnant prices and pressure from declining market share.
The report said privacy-focused cryptocurrencies including Zcash and Monero are drawing attention, raising the need for Ethereum to strengthen transaction confidentiality as well. Without privacy features that meet institutional investors' requirements, Ethereum could struggle to retain its position as a base settlement layer.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently outlined a privacy technology roadmap. It includes FOCIL, designed to prevent transaction censorship; account abstraction and keyed nonces, aimed at anonymizing account behavior patterns; and Kohaku, a wallet-layer privacy technology.
The market sees Ethereum expanding its focus beyond scalability and fees to strengthening its privacy capabilities. Still, some expect real-world deployment to take time given the regulatory environment and the technical complexity of implementation.
