Anthropic Raises Funding at $96.5 Billion Valuation, Overtaking OpenAI

Yahoo Finance reported on May 28 that Anthropic had completed a new $6.5 billion funding round that valued the company at $96.5 billion. OpenAI was valued at $85.2 billion when it raised funding in March.
Anthropic’s growth has been driven by its competitiveness in the enterprise AI market. Its AI coding service, Claude, has spread rapidly among corporate customers, helping lift revenue.
Anthropic said in April that its annualized revenue had exceeded $3 billion. On May 28, it raised that figure to $4.7 billion. That is more than five times last year’s $900 million.
Investors in the latest round included Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks and Sequoia Capital. The total also included roughly $1.5 billion in previously committed investment from hyperscale cloud providers, including Amazon.
Anthropic and OpenAI have now begun competing in earnest toward an initial public offering. Along with SpaceX, the two companies are among the most closely watched private firms this year.
