Cardano Summit 2026, the network’s flagship annual event, has been canceled after the Cardano Foundation’s budget proposal failed to meet the approval threshold required under the blockchain’s new governance system. The result is being viewed as a case in which community-led decision-making directly limited treasury spending.

CoinDesk reported on June 1 that the Cardano Foundation will cancel Cardano Summit 2026, which had been scheduled to take place in Singapore, and wind down related preparations. The foundation’s treasury proposal won support from a majority of delegated representatives, or DReps, but did not reach the two-thirds approval required for passage.

Under Cardano’s Voltaire governance framework, major treasury spending and protocol decisions require community approval. DReps vote on budget allocations and network-related proposals on behalf of ADA holders.

The summit budget proposal became a prominent test of that governance system. The foundation requested several million ADA for the ecosystem’s flagship annual event, but some DReps objected to the size of the budget and the scope of spending.

The Cardano Foundation and EMURGO had originally requested more than 14 million ADA in a combined proposal covering the summit and participation in Token2049 Singapore. After criticism from DReps, the two sides split the proposal and reduced the scope of the event sponsorship.

The revised Cardano Summit budget proposal still failed to clear the approval threshold. By contrast, a separate proposal from EMURGO for Token2049 Singapore was approved. It requested 3.3 million ADA for a Cardano brand pavilion, a builder showcase stage and ecosystem programming.

The Cardano Foundation said it respects the voting result and will end preparations for the summit. The foundation added that the vote showed the kind of careful participation needed for effective governance.
