The US military said it intercepted two Iranian ballistic missiles targeting American troops stationed in Kuwait, underscoring the risk of renewed military confrontation as tensions persist over implementation of a ceasefire between Washington and Tehran.
US Central Command, or CENTCOM, wrote on X on June 1 that American forces successfully intercepted the two missiles at 11 p.m. Eastern time on the previous night.
The missiles were immediately neutralized, and there were no US casualties, CENTCOM said.
"We will remain vigilant to protect US forces from Iranian attacks and support the ongoing ceasefire," the command said.
The announcement came as the US and Iran continue to spar over the scope of the ceasefire agreement and whether it has been violated. Markets are also growing more cautious that any renewed escalation in Middle East tensions could weigh on oil prices and sentiment toward risk assets.
