Mohsen Rezaei, an adviser to Iran’s supreme leader, said the Strait of Hormuz is under Iran’s control and that Tehran will not allow the current blockade to continue. Markets are closely watching the dispute between the US and Iran over control of the waterway.
On June 1, Rezaei wrote on X, formerly Twitter, that “the Strait of Hormuz is under Iran’s management” and that “we will not allow the blockade to continue.”
The comments came as the US has recently called for the strait to be fully reopened and for freedom of navigation to be guaranteed. Iran’s Foreign Ministry has also said that decisions on management of the strait should be made by Iran and Oman.
The US and Iran are currently holding talks on extending a ceasefire, resuming nuclear negotiations and normalizing operations in the Strait of Hormuz. Major differences remain over control of the strait, transit rules and the scope of sanctions relief.
