President Donald Trump said negotiations between the US and Iran are continuing, pushing back on reports that the talks had been suspended. Markets are closely watching whether the two sides can make progress and reach a final agreement.

Walter Bloomberg reported on June 2 that Trump dismissed reports of a breakdown in communication between Washington and Tehran as "fake news."

Trump said the two sides have continued talks every day, including over the past several days. He added that Iran "has to make a deal" and said the current situation has lasted for 47 years and can no longer continue.

He also said he did not know how the negotiations would end.

Iran has recently raised the possibility of halting talks, citing airstrikes in Lebanon and escalating tensions in the Middle East. The US, however, has maintained that negotiations are still ongoing.

The two sides are negotiating an extension of the ceasefire, the resumption of nuclear talks and the normalization of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Major differences remain over limits on uranium enrichment, the scope of sanctions relief and control of the strait.

Investors are assessing whether progress in US-Iran talks could affect global financial markets, including oil prices, gold and the dollar.
