President Donald Trump said he would be willing to meet Iran’s new supreme leader if the sides reach a deal to end the war in the Middle East.

Trump made the remarks to reporters in the Oval Office on June 4, CNN reported. He said he was not pushing for a meeting for its own sake, but called it an honor if one were arranged.

“I want to see if we can make a deal, and if we make a deal, meeting the supreme leader is possible,” Trump said. “I’m OK with it.”

Asked whether such talks could be held in the US, Trump said he had not heard much about that possibility. He added that while he did not propose it himself, some people had raised the idea.

Trump also made clear he would be respectful if a meeting with Iran’s supreme leader takes place.

“I may not be his favorite person,” he said. “But despite that, he would probably be a professional.”

Trump added that, according to some reports, the Iranian leader has a very good reputation.
