President Donald Trump has ordered broad workforce cuts across US intelligence agencies, according to a report. Markets are watching for possible changes to the federal government's restructuring drive and the national security apparatus.

Walter Bloomberg reported on June 5 that Trump directed acting Director of National Intelligence Bill Pulte to pursue large-scale staff reductions across the intelligence community.

Trump described the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, or ODNI, as "unnecessary" and excessively large, the report said.

The ODNI oversees and coordinates US intelligence agencies. It works with the Central Intelligence Agency, the National Security Agency and the Federal Bureau of Investigation on intelligence collection and analysis.

The move is part of the Trump administration's push to shrink the federal government and cut costs.

The size of the cuts, the agencies affected and the timing of the plan were not immediately disclosed.

Markets are focused on the implications for the US intelligence system and national security policy.
