Reuters and AFP reported on June 8 that Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said diplomatic consultations were continuing "under any circumstances."
Still, he said it was only natural that the diplomatic process launched to end what he described as an imposed war would be affected. The US must bear direct responsibility for all actions by the "Zionist regime," meaning Israel, that violate regional peace and security against Iran, he added.
The Israeli military said the same day that it had carried out a large-scale airstrike targeting strategic air-defense systems across Iran. It said the operation struck Iranian air defenses that had been destroyed in attacks in late February and were recently restored and redeployed. Israel's military said the latest strike had disabled those systems. Dozens of fighter jets took part in the operation.
Iran retaliated by launching missiles toward Israel. AFP reported that multiple explosions were heard in Jerusalem and Ramallah in the West Bank, as the Israeli military said it was intercepting Iranian missiles.
