Iran's military declared a halt to operations against Israel about an hour after US President Donald Trump called for an immediate end to the fighting.

In a statement carried by Iranian media on June 8, the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, Iran's integrated military command, said it had delivered a painful response to the "Zionist regime" and was halting operations.

The statement said Iran's armed forces had supported the people of Lebanon in response to what it described as the Zionist regime's aggression and atrocities in southern Lebanon and Dahiyeh, a Hezbollah stronghold on the outskirts of Beirut, carried out with support from the United States.

It added that if what it called the enemy's aggression and atrocities continue, including in southern Lebanon, Iran would take far stronger and more overwhelming measures than before.

Earlier, Iran's military fired ballistic missiles at Israel from the night of June 7 into the early hours of June 8, saying the attack was retaliation for Israel's June 7 airstrike on Beirut. Israel responded on June 8 with two rounds of airstrikes, one in the early morning and another later in the day, targeting major Iranian cities including Tehran, Karaj and Isfahan.
