Bae Kyung-hoon, deputy prime minister and science minister, said on June 8 that South Korea had secured first priority for supply of Nvidia Corp.’s next-generation artificial intelligence accelerator, Vera Rubin, after meeting Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang.

Bae also said Huang pledged to invest in South Korea’s AI ecosystem together with the government.

Huang’s final event in South Korea on June 8 was a closed-door Korea AI Ecosystem Reception with domestic startups at the Shilla Seoul in Jangchung-dong, Seoul. The gathering was attended by major companies including Samsung Electronics Co., SK Hynix Inc. and Hyundai Motor Co., along with 18 startups including Upstage, Nota, WIRobotics and AeiRobot.

An AI industry official said the event focused on explaining what role each company could play in Nvidia’s ecosystem. The discussions also appeared to test the potential for actual collaboration and investment, the person added.

Asked by Bae about his intensive schedule in South Korea, Huang said the country has an advantage in being able to grow neutrally amid the U.S.-China rivalry and could generate major synergies when combined with AI, according to Bae.
